Update: Outage at Kapaia Power Station culprit to Kaua‘i blackout

Update 6:33 a.m. Thursday: Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative reported at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday that the Kapaia Power Station was back online and power to all members was being restored.

According to the outage map on KIUC, 3,208 customers were still without about as of 7:58 a.m. with most of the reported outages in Princeville.

Update 9:56 p.m. Wednesday: With roughly 50% of its members restored, KIUC’s crews continue to work on full restoration. Early analysis shows a fault at the Kapaia switchyard caused all generators to trip offline.

Power is being restored as generators are brought back online.

Update 9:08 p.m. Wednesday: As of 8:45 p.m. Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative reports restored power to roughly 40% of its customers.

The outage map is up again. There’s no timeframe yet for full restoration.

KIUC is still diagnosing the cause of the outage and is restoring power as generation units can be brought back online. There’s still no estimated time of restoration for all customers.

Original post: Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative is reporting an islandwide power outage tonight.

According to officials, they are working on diagnosing the issue to restore power. With power out, KIUC reports its outage map is offline.

Several people commented on the KIUC Facebook post about the outage. According to residents, power is out across the North Shore, West Side and South Side, including in Kalāheo, Hanapēpē, Kīlauea, Kōloa, Kapa‘a, Hanalei, Princeville and several other communities.
