Kaua‘i firefighters extinguish two fires Sunday

Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished a brush fire in Waimea and a storage fire in Kalāheo on July 7.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a brush fire at the Pāʻulaʻula State Historic Site in Waimea shortly after 12:15 p.m.

Personnel with the Waimea Fire Station, the Kaua‘i Police Department and private landowners responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, firefighters discovered a 50-foot-by-50-foot area of grass and brush on fire upon their arrival shortly before 12:25 p.m.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire with the assistance of a private landowner and later extinguished it. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

The second fire occurred in Kalāheo, as first responders received a report from Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch of a building fire on Ikena Place shortly before 5:55 p.m.

Personnel with the Kalāheo and Hanapēpē fire stations, Rescue 3 and the on-duty battalion chief responded to the incident.

Crews discovered a fire on the second floor of a two-story condo upon their arrival at approximately 6 p.m., according to a preliminary report. Firefighters knocked down the fire and later extinguished it, confining the blaze to a storage room.

The scene was later transferred to the Fire Prevention Bureau for further investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, while the estimated cost of damage to property and contents is $35,000.
