Update: Flood advisory for Kaua‘i canceled

Update at 2:58 p.m. May 10: The National Weather Service says radar shows that the heavy rainfall that started at about 1 p.m. today has diminished and the flood advisory that was in effect for Kaua‘i has been canceled.

However, a flood watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for the entire state.

Original post from 1:30 p.m. May 10: National Weather Service radar shows heavy rain falling this afternoon over the southern half of Kaua‘i.

Because that the area of drenching rainfall is forecast to increase during the next couple of hours, a flood advisory is now in effect until 4 p.m. for the island.

A flood watch is also in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for the entire state.

The highest rainfall rates just before 1 p.m. on Kaua‘i were 1 to 2 inches per hour over the Kalaheo and Waimea Canyon areas.

Minor flooding on roads, places with poor drainage and in streams is expected as excessive rainfall continues and expands.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Līhuʻe, Kapaʻa, Kalaheo, Kekaha, North Fork Wailua Trails, Lāwaʻi, ʻŌmaʻo, Hanapēpē, Kōloa, Waimea, Poʻipū, Kōkeʻe State Park, Wailua Homesteads, Wailua, Mana, Polihale, Barking Sands, ʻEleʻele, Kaumakani and Pakala Village.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
