The Niumalu Bridge in Nāwiliwili on the East Side of Kaua‘i is closed until further notice due to damage from the recent flood event, county officials reported Tuesday evening.

“County consultants inspected county bridges and determined that Niumalu Bridge sustained damages from the flood and deemed it unsafe for motorists, prompting an immediate shutdown,” said County Engineer Troy Tanigawa. “We apologize to area residents, businesses and others who frequent the area for the inconvenience. However, the closure was necessary for the safety of the community.”

County crews will be installing electronic message boards, detour signs and barricades in the area, and residents and businesses in the area will be advised to use Hulemalu Road as a detour.
