Update: Flood watch has also been canceled

5:16 p.m. April 14 update: The flood watch has been canceled. There are no weather alerts for Kaua‘i or Ni‘ihau at this time.

Cleanup efforts from flooding are underway.

4:54 p.m. April 14 update: The flood advisory is canceled for Kaua‘i, however a flood watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for both the Garden Isle and Ni‘ihau.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, radar shows that the heavy rain has diminished. Flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.

Showers will remain possible overnight.

1:47 p.m. April 14 update: A flood warning on Kaua‘i has been canceled, however, an advisory remains in place till 5 p.m.

At 1:41 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain moving over Kauai, and was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Area streams will remain elevated and may rise with additional rainfall.

11:19 a.m. April 14 update: The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Kaua‘i, due to heavy rains occurring over the island. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

Multiple road closures throughout the island remain because of flooding.

Ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution.

10:22 a.m. April 14 update: A flood advisory for Kaua‘i was extended to 2 p.m.

At 1014 a.m., radar indicated a line of heavy rain moving across the island from west to east, with rain falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Additional rain at rates around 1 inch per hour will continue behind this line. Area streams continue to remain elevated and will respond quickly to additional rain.

7:04 a.m. April 14 update: A flood advisory is in effect till 11 a.m. for the island of Kaua‘i.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, radar indicated heavy rain over the island at 5:13 a.m. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams is expected.

A special marine warning was issued for the waters surrounding Kaua‘i until 7:45 a.m.

At 5:39 a.m., heavy showers and embedded thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 37 nm northwest of Lehua Rock to near Makahuena Point, moving northeast at 25 knots.

Wind gusts of 34 knots or greater are expected.

Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.

Locations impacted include Nawiliwili Harbor, FAD Buoy CK, FAD Buoy DK, FAD Buoy Kīlauea Lighthouse, Southern Tip of Ni‘ihau, Kikiaola Harbor, and Hanalei Bay.

Original post: A flash flood watch is in place for Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i from late tonight through late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a slow-moving front will produce heavy showers and thunderstorms over Kaua‘i County. Due to pre-existing wet soil conditions, any additional heavy rainfall will quickly lead to runoff and flash flooding concerns.

Wet weather conditions will begin to improve by Monday morning with decreasing rainfall amounts.

Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.
