Update: Gov. Josh Green issues emergency proclamation for storm on Kaua‘i

3:42 p.m. April 12 update: Gov. Josh Green issued an emergency proclamation today in response to the heavy rains, flooding and landslides impacting the County of Kaua‘i.

This proclamation helps to speed up the implementation of emergency management functions to protect health and safety, and allows the state to provide services, materials and facilities for emergency response efforts.

“The severe weather on Kaua‘i has caused damage to our roads, bridges, and other infrastructure,” Green said. “This emergency disaster proclamation will help the state and county with the emergency response to the heavy rains, flooding and landsides impacting the people of Kaua‘i.”

This action authorizes the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency to take appropriate action to assist in emergency response efforts. It also authorizes the Adjutant General to activate the Hawai‘i National Guard, as deemed necessary, to assist and aid civilian authorities in disaster relief and to provide for public safety. The proclamation suspends laws that might impede or delay the execution of emergency functions.

Original post: Acting Mayor Reiko Matsuyama signed an emergency proclamation on April 12 for the County of Kaua‘i due to a rain event on April 11 and April 12.

The disaster emergency relief period shall now continue until terminated 60 days after April 12 or by a separate proclamation – whichever comes first.

The purpose of the emergency proclamation is to provide continued relief for disaster damages, losses, and suffering, and to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Kaua‘i residents and visitors.

An emergency proclamation has also been requested from Gov. Josh Green and an announcement will be made when an update is available.

Residents are advised to start documenting and taking photos of damages on their property. More information on damage assessments will be announced.
