High surf warning downgraded to advisory for parts of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i

A high surf advisory is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i until 6 p.m. Saturday. The high surf warning is canceled.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a large northwest (320 degrees) swell peaked this morning and is now slowly lowering. However, this swell will continue to produce advisory-level surf into the weekend. The swell will continue to lower through the weekend.

For north-facing shores, surf of 18 to 22 feet is expected tonight, lowering to 12 to 16 feet Saturday.

For west-facing shores, surf of 15 to 20 feet is expected tonight tonight, lowering to 8 to 12 feet Saturday.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous. Head all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
