Colorado man dies boogie boarding at Allerton beach

The County of Kaua’i announced that a 69-year-old man from Colorado died on Friday, Mar. 1, after hitting his head on a rock while boogie boarding at Allerton Beach in Koloa.

The Kaua‘i Police Department issued the following statement following the incident:

 A male visitor died Friday afternoon after being pulled from waters off Allerton Beach.

The victim has been identified as a 69-year-old male from Colorado.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Mar. 1, first responders were dispatched to Allerton Beach for a medical call. The victim was boogie boarding when he struck his head on a rock.

Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel with the Koloa fire station and AMR medics responded to the scene. With assistance from Allerton Garden security, firefighters and medics extricated the man out of the remote location to awaiting AMR medics who provided advanced life support. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.

Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, were contacted to offer support to the victim’s family.
