Kauaʻi police urge community to take precautions against vehicle break-ins

With a recent surge in vehicle break-ins at the trailheads of popular hiking spots in the Kapa‘a and North Shore areas, the Kauaʻi Police Department is urging the public to take precautions to minimize the risk of being targeted by criminals.

The incidents typically involve breaking into parked vehicles to steal valuable items left behind by unsuspecting victims. Common targets include electronic devices, wallets, purses and other valuables easily visible within the vehicle.

Kauaʻi police offer these safety tips to protect yourself and your property:

• Before leaving your vehicle unattended, ensure all valuable items are either taken with you or stored out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment. Visible valuables tempt thieves and increase the likelihood of a break-in.
• Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit and highly visible areas, especially at trailheads and hiking areas. Avoid secluded or poorly lit parking spots that could provide cover for criminal activity.
• Always lock your vehicle and close all windows before leaving. Even if you plan to be away for just a short time, taking this simple step can deter opportunistic thieves.
• Be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities near trailheads or parking areas to local law enforcement immediately by calling Kauaʻi Police Department dispatch at 808-241-1711. If it is an emergency, call 911. Your prompt reporting can help prevent further incidents and assist in apprehending suspects.
