Update: High surf advisory extended for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, coastal flooding also expected

3:31 p.m. update on Jan. 12: A high surf advisory was extended for north-facing shores until 6 p.m. Saturday and for west-facing shores at 6 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, surf will peak at 18 to 22 feet along north shorelines and lower throughout Saturday. For west-facing shores, surf is expected to be 10 to 14 feet and lower to below 12 feet by 6 a.m. Saturday.

Minor to localized moderate low-lying coastal flooding during times of high tide is anticipated.

Original post: A high surf advisory is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i through early Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, coastal flooding is also expected for all the main Hawaiian Islands.

A series of northwest and north swells will arrive and pass around the islands over the next couple of days with both swells peaking on Friday. These swells coming in early morning high tide times will cause additional wave run-up and likely produce minor to localized moderate coastal flooding on both Friday and Saturday mornings.

Surf will peak at 18 to 22 feet along north-facing shores, and 10 to 15 feet along west-facing shores. Minor to localized flooding is expected in low-lying coastal flooding during times of high tide.

Flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation is expected. Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.
