High surf advisory issued for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i

A high surf advisory is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i from noon till 6 a.m. on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a large northwest swell is building from the northwest to the southeast down the island chain and will peak tonight and Wednesday.

For north-facing shores, surf will build to 12 to 16 feet this afternoon, then rise to 15 to 20 feet tonight and Wednesday. For west-facing shores, surf will build to 9 to 12 feet this afternoon, then rise to 12 to 16 feet tonight and Wednesday.

Beachgoers should expect strong-breaking waves and strong currents, making swimming dangerous.
