Kaua‘i firefighters extinguish multiple brush fires Wednesday

Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished brush fires in Anahola and Kōke‘e on Wednesday.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.

Firefighters with the Kapa‘a and Kaiākea fire stations, Air 1, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, shortly before 10:45 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire on Kalalea Road in Anahola.

When firefighters arrived on scene shortly before 10:50 a.m., they discovered two fires at the end of Kalalea Road. The first fire was a combination of brush and a vehicle, which firefighters contained and extinguished shortly after.

In a remote, forested area, first responders tackled an additional vehicle and brush fire. With support from Air 1, fire crews quickly contained and extinguished the blaze.

The scene was cleared at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Firefighters responded to the other brush fire in Kōke‘e shortly before 3 p.m.

Crews arrived on the scene shortly after 3 p.m. and discovered a brush fire from a permitted agriculture burn on private land in Kōke‘e.

Firefighters from the Waimea, Līhu‘e, Kalāheo, and Hanapēpē fire stations, the on-duty Battalion Chief, and the Kaua‘i Police Department responded to the incident.

Staging on Waimea Canyon Drive, fire crews discovered a 300-by-300-foot brush fire moving uphill. Personnel with the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative shut off power to nearby lines, while crews knocked down the fire and later extinguished it. Crews remained on the scene until all remaining hot spots were put out.

While fire crews battled the blaze, Kaua‘i Police Department personnel closed Waimea Canyon Drive, from Panini Place to Kōke‘e Road for approximately one hour and 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire was due to a permitted controlled burn.
