One in 6 Hawai‘i residents face hunger daily, and with the devastating wildfires on Maui, there is an even more urgent, growing need for food assistance.

Hawai‘i Foodbank’s annual Food Drive Day on Aug. 26 not only includes donations of food, it will also raise funds to support the food bank’s Maui Relief Fund. Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i and The Food Basket on the Big Island also are lending their support this Food Drive Day to those impacted by the wildfires.

“Our thoughts are with our Maui ‘ohana and everyone impacted by the devastating wildfires,” said Hawai‘i Foodbank President and CEO Amy Miller Marvin. “The support pouring out across the state demonstrates just how resilient the people of Hawai‘i are. This Food Drive Day, we hope the public will join us in standing with our neighbors on Maui as they recover and rebuild.”

To help Hawai‘i Foodbank as it works to provide immediate relief for Maui residents, prepare for long-term recovery and maintain its current programs, the public is encouraged to collect food and monetary donations leading up to Food Drive Day and drop them off from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several collection sites on O‘ahu or the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i warehouse in Līhuʻe.

Residents on Kaua‘i also are invited to make an online donation. Big Island residents can also participate online.

“The best way for people to provide immediate support for Maui’s relief efforts is by making an online donation,” Marvin said. “Monetary donations can more quickly be utilized to help provide support and food assistance to those in need. Hawai‘i Foodbank is also happy to collect food donations, and people can drop off their donations at one of our Food Drive Day collection sites.”

Hawai‘i Foodbank is supporting its neighbors on Maui and partners at the Maui Food Bank by coordinating donations of food, water and supplies from O‘ahu and the mainland to the Maui Food Bank. It is also working with local and national companies to source needed food items for distribution.
