Update at 3:05 p.m. Aug. 17: Kaua‘i police have identified the man who died in a crash involving a truck and motorcycle Aug. 14 in Kīlauea as 60-year-old Jerry Swanson of Kapa‘a, who was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Original story: An unidentified man is dead following a traffic crash in Kīlauea Saturday evening.

The crash, involving a motor vehicle and motorcycle, occurred at the junction of Kūhiō Highway and North Waiakalua Road in Kīlauea. Kaua‘i police were dispatched to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m.

According to a preliminary report, a male operating a Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling north on Kūhiō Highway collided with a GMC Truck attempting to turn left onto North Waiakalua Road. The truck was operated by a 33-year-old Kapa‘a man.

While the Kapa‘a man was uninjured, American Medical Response personnel pronounced the unidentified motorcyclist dead at the scene.

Kūhiō Highway near North Waiakalua Road was closed in both directions for approximately 2.5 hours while the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology reports are pending.
