Update: Department of Health cancels Po‘ipū bacteria count warning
Aug. 9 update: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health has canceled the notification for Poipu Beach Pavilion on Kaua‘i. Water sample retesting results show that enterococci levels no longer exceed the threshold level.
Original post: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health is retesting Poipu Beach Pavilion on the South Shore of Kaua‘i.
Levels of 624 per 100 mL were detected during routine beach monitoring, but the health department is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample.
This beach has historically met the acceptable beach threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination. Therefore, the health department has collected another sample and is retesting the site. The Department of Health will provide an update based on the results of this retesting.
