Hawai‘i Land Trust names Kapule Torio as Kaua‘i Steward & Educator

Hawai‘i Land Trust, or HILT – a statewide local nonprofit land trust – has welcomed Kapule Torio as its Kaua‘i Steward & Educator.

Torio is joining HILT’s Kāhili Steward & Educator, Ann Eu, at the 17-acre Kāhili Beach Preserve and will also work on other HILT projects on Kaua‘i.

“Born and raised on Kaua‘i, I have come to embrace the kūleana that comes with caring for many wahi pana here,” Torio said. “I have fond memories of long weekends spent with family gathering on the shores of Kāhili surfing, fishing, and loving the ‘āina.”

Torio has 13 years of cumulative program coordination experience for the nonprofit Waipā Foundation and Kanuikapono Public Charter School, including the development of ‘āina-based educational programs and work with partners such as Kamehameha Schools, NOAA, KUPU, and the Surfrider Foundation.

He also has experience in agricultural restoration, maintenance, harvesting and processing; apiary management; and pipe restoration.

Torio attended Kauaʻi Community College and graduated from Kapa‘a High School. He also served for 6 years in the Hawai‘i Army National Guard. He lives with his wife and three sons in Anahola, Kaua’i, where he spends time as a beekeeper, kalo planter and waterman.
