The national nonprofit Petco Love is donating $20,000 to the Kauaʻi Humane Society in support of its lifesaving work for animals on the island.

Nicole Schafer Crane, executive director of the Kauaʻi Humane Society, said: “It means heartworm treatment for Brutus, our 5-year-old American Staffordshire mix; an extracted broken canine for David, our 1-year-old hound mix; X-rays for Tiny Tim’s broken left-hind leg, our 3-month old kitten; and so much more life-saving care.

“This investment provides care to shelter animals no matter how long they reside at KHS and provides healthy adoptable animals to our community.”

Since 1952, Kauaʻi Humane Society has served the island of Kauaʻi as its only open-intake animal shelter.

In 2022, the animal shelter cared for 2,407 dogs and cats, saved 517 neonatal kittens with a live release rate of 94.2%, transferred 508 animals to no-kill rescue partners, and returned 389 animals to their families.

Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $350 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. The organization also helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations across North America, with 6.7 million pets adopted and counting.

Petco Love President Susanne Kogut said in a news release that its investment to the Kauaʻi Humane Society is part of $15 million in investments to help prevent pets from being unnecessarily euthanized.

“Our local investments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us,” Kogut said. “We recently launched Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet image technology to simplify the search for lost pets.”
