Sections of Mailihuna and Kawaihau roads in Kapa‘a will close Monday for road resurfacing and construction, respectively.

The Department of Public Works and its contractor Maui Kupono Builders have announced portions of Kawaihau Road will be closed from May 8 to May 12, weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

This is a one-lane closure of Kawaihau Road, from Kahuna Road to Hau‘a‘ala Road, which is necessary for road resurfacing work.

During this time, no parking will be allowed in the work zones. Flaggers will be positioned at both ends of the work zone to direct traffic.

Anyone with questions may contact Maui Kupono Builders at 808-369-1800 or Todd Ozaki at the County of Kaua‘i at 808-241-4845.

Portions of Mailihuna Road will be closed from May 8 to May 13, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A portion of Mailihuna Road will experience periodic one-lane closures and road narrowing. The closure is necessary for clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation, and roadway construction. During work hours, lanes will be shifted to help accommodate for the construction.

The new Kolohala Road entrance will now be the permanent new route.

Motorists are advised to expect brief and occasional delays. Please exercise caution and drive slowly when commuting through the work area.

The project aims to construct a peanut-shaped roundabout, sidewalks, paved shoulders, and other roadway improvements to improve the safety and operations of the 5-way intersection of Kawaihau Road, Hauʻaʻala Road and Mailihuna Road. This area contains St. Catherine’s School and Church, Kapaʻa High School, Kapaʻa Elementary School, Mahelona Hospital, and Gore Park.f

The project has an estimated completion date of October 2023.

Dates and times are subject to change depending on weather and other factors.
