County of Kaua‘i firefighters responded to a male hiker in distress Sunday afternoon along the Kalalau Trail.

Shortly before 2 p.m., firefighters were notified of a 40-year-old visitor from Madrid, Spain, who reportedly dislocated his shoulder while hiking along the Kalalau Trail.

Rescue personnel aboard a helicopter were dispatched to the scene and found the man approximately two miles from the trailhead. Rescuers assessed the man’s injuries and assisted him to the Hanakāpī‘ai landing zone. From there, he was airlifted to Princeville Airport on the North Shore of Kaua‘i, where awaiting American Medical Response medics provided further treatment.
