Kauaʻi homeowners eligible for 10% discount through National Flood Insurance Program
Starting April 1, 2023, Kaua’i homeowners may qualify for a 10 percent discount on flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
“This discount is a result of our community’s flood mitigation activities to protect lives and reduce property damage,” Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said in a press release.
Earlier this year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved the county’s application to the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System.
The Department of Homeland Security verified that the County of Kaua‘i exceeds the minimum standards of the National Flood Insurance Program and meets the criteria for a Class 8 rating, qualifying homeowners for a 10 percent discount through the program.

There are about 1,500 communities across the United States that participate in the voluntary program that has been around since 1990. The ratings go from 1 to 10, with a Class 10 rating receiving no discount and a Class 1 rating receiving a 45 percent discount.
Communities can improve their rating by receiving points for a wide variety of proactive actions to mitigate flooding.
