Missing hiker found Monday night in Waimea Canyon on Kauaʻi

At 8:40 p.m. on Monday, Kauaʻi firefighters found a 26-year-old male hiker from California who had been reported missing in Waimea Canyon the night before by his mother.
Waimea firefighters located the hiker in good condition, according to County of Kaua’i public information officer Alden Alayvilla.
The man was reported missing around 5 p.m. on Monday. Six Kaua’i firefighters began the search on foot from the Waimea Canyon trailhead. Just before dusk, the firefighters found what was believed to be the hikerʻs blue backpack.
The firefighters radioed to say they were continuing the search into the night. The weather was not an issue, with cloudy skies and light winds.
At approximately 7:45 p.m., firefighters received the hiker’s coordinates from Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch after the California visitor called 911 and described his location.
First responders located the hiker near the Black Pipe Trail at approximately 8:40 p.m. and escorted him to his party at the Pu‘uhinahina Lookout.
