Kauaʻi County offices close March 27 in observance of Prince Kūhiō Day

In observance of the Prince Kūhiō Day holiday, County of Kaua‘i offices and all neighborhood centers will be closed on March 27.

Prince Kūhiō Day is celebrated annually on March 26 to mark the birth of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole — heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, prince of the House of Kalākaua, and later territorial delegate to the U.S. Congress. It was established in 1949 by the legislature of the Territory of Hawaiʻi.

As a delegate, Kuhio authored the first Hawaiʻi Statehood bill in 1919. He also won passage of the Hawaiian Homes Act, creating the Hawaiian Homes Commission and setting aside 200,000 acres of land for Hawaiian homesteaders.

Other closures and openings surrounding the holiday on Kauaʻi:

• Refuse transfer stations and the Kekaha landfill will be closed for the holiday on March 26, but will open on March 27.

• The Waimea swimming pool will observe the holiday on March 28 since the pool is normally closed on Mondays.

• The HI5 Bottle Redemption Center operated by Reynolds at the Kaua‘i Resource Center in Līhu‘e will be open on March 27. See www.kauai.gov/HI5 for location information.

• The schedule for residential refuse pick-up will remain unchanged.

• The Kaua‘i Bus will be operating on its current daily schedule.

Regular business hours for county offices and services will resume on March 28.
