Wind advisory extended for part Kauaʻi; high surf advisory also in effect

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a wind advisory in effect for portions of Kauaʻi until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

A very strong high pressure system far north of the Hawaiian Islands will continue to produce strong and gusty trade winds through much of the work week. Wind speeds will exceed advisory threshold throughout many parts of the state at least through Wednesday.

The forecast is for east winds of 25 to 35 mph, with localized gusts up to 55 mph.

Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to drive, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.

A high surf advisory for east-facing shores also remains in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. Surf of 7 to 10 feet building to 10 to 14 feed Wednesday is forecast.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.
