Lane closure for Kawaihau Road scheduled from Feb. 25 to Mar. 3

A portion of Kawaihau Road and Pelehu Road in Kapa‘a will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works and Grace Pacific LLC have announced.

The area will then be closed from Monday, Feb. 27 to March 3, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

On Feb. 25, Kawaihau Road and Pelehu Road will experience a one-lane closure and detours. The closure and detours for Pelehu Road and Kawaihau Road is necessary for clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation, sidewalk construction and roadway construction.

Kawaihau Road will experience temporary traffic shift and road narrowing. Pelehu Road will be closed from Kawaihau Road to Nunu Road, with traffic being limited to residents in the closed roadway area. “Local traffic only” signs will be installed to inform motorists. Pelehu Road and its intersection with Kawaihau Rd. will then be open to the public after the work is complete.

No work will occur on Sunday, Feb. 26.

From Feb. 27 to March 3, a portion of Kawaihau Road will experience periodic one-lane closure and road narrowing. The closure on Kawaihau Road is necessary for clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation, and sidewalk construction.

Motorists are advised to expect brief and occasional delays. Exercise caution and drive slowly when commuting though the work area.

The project aims to construct a peanut-shaped roundabout, sidewalks, paved shoulders and various other roadway improvements to help improve the safety and operations of the five-way intersection of these three roads and for people using multiple modes to travel efficiently and safely through Kawaihau Road, Hau’a’ala Road and Mailihuna Road located in Kapaʻa. This area contains St. Catherine’s School/Church, Kapaʻa High School, Kapaʻa Elementary School, Mahelona Hospital, and Gore Park.

The project has an estimated completion date of October 2023.
