Update: High surf advisory cancelled for Kauaʻi, Niʻihau

Update at 6:50 a.m. on Feb. 17: The National Weather Service has cancelled the high surf advisory for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.

Strong to near-gale force east-southeast winds will keep large and rough surf in place along east-facing shores during the next couple of days.

Original post: The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for the east-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau from 6 a.m. on Friday through 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The forecast calls for southeast winds to strengthen and maintain through the weekend. Local wind waves and upstream swell generated by a strong high pressure system will bring surf above advisory levels through Saturday.

Surf is expected to be 8 to 12 feet.

• Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

• Beach-goers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials; when in doubt, don’t go out.
