Flood watch in effect for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau from 6 p.m. Sunday to Monday afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau that goes into effect at 6 p.m. Sunday and runs though Monday afternoon.

An upper-level low is approaching the state that will increase the threat for heavy rainfall across the state with the heaviest rain expected tonight through Monday. The
heaviest rainfall is expected to fall over windward and mountain areas, but some periods of intense showers could spread to leeward areas, where stream flow could also become
elevated.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

Flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.

A flood watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding. Flash flooding is life-threatening. Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle or on foot.
