UPDATE: Kūhiō Highway near the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge reopens

Updated 7:11 a.m. Jan. 25: The Flash Flooding warning is canceled and Kūhiō Highway near the Hanalei Bridge is now open. Additionally, the Kūhiō Highway southbound contraflow between Kapule Highway and the Kapa‘a Bypass will not open today as the crew that sets the contraflow responded to flooding near Hanalei Bridge and will not have had sufficient rest to open the contraflow, which normally opens at 4:15 a.m.

Updated 9:39 p.m. Jan. 24: Due to flooding in the area, Kūhiō Highway near the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge is closed, according to Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch. 

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Hale Halawai in Hanalei.

The Kūhiō Highway southbound contraflow between Kapule Highway and the Kapaʻa Bypass will not open on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The crew that sets the contraflow is responding to flooding near Hanalei Bridge and will not have had sufficient rest to open the contraflow at 4:15 a.m.

The National Weather Service also has canceled its flash flood warning for Kauaʻi.

Original post: The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Kauaʻi until 7:30 tonight due to excessive rainfall.

At 4:26 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the north shore of Kauaʻi. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. Additional showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible through this evening.

Some locations that will experience flooding include: Kapaʻa, Princeville, Kilauea, Wainiha, Hanalei, Haʻena, NāPali State Park, Kōkeʻe State Park, North Fork Wailua Trails, Moloaʻa, Anahola, Polihale, Barking Sands, Kalihiwai and Waimea Canyon State Park.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. There may be minor flooding on roads.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 7:30 p.m. HST if flooding persists.
