UPDATE: High surf advisory for portions of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau canceled
Updated 2 p.m. Jan. 24, 2023: The National Weather Service has canceled the high surf advisory for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.
Original post: The National Weather Service downgraded the high surf warning for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau to a high surf advisory, which will be in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The forecast is for large breaking waves of 18 to 24 feet for north-facing shores, subsiding to 10 to 15 feet.
For west-facing shores, the forecast is for large breaking waves of 14 to 18 feet, subsiding to 8 to 12 feet.
This is due to a northwest swell at 320 degrees that will gradually subside tonight and fall below advisory thresholds on Tuesday evening.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.
Head all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t
go out.
