Polish visitor dies off Hanalei Beach while trying to help two distressed swimmers
A 67-year-old male visitor died Wednesday afternoon in waters off Hanalei Beach.
He has been identified as Janusz Jakubowicz of Poland.
The Kaua‘i Police Department, personnel with the Hanalei fire station, Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards, North Roving Ski patrol, American Medical Response and bystanders responded to the incident.
According to the preliminary report, at approximately 5:15 p.m., first responders received a call of distressed swimmers in waters west of the Hanalei Pavilion lifeguard tower.
In an attempt to assist two swimmers, Jakubowicz became distressed. The two swimmers made it safely to shore. However, Jakubowicz became unresponsive in the water and was brought to shore by local surfers.
On shore, first ocean safety lifeguards and fire personnel administered CPR. American Medical Response personnel continued advanced life-saving treatment on Jakubowicz while in transport to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, but he could not be revived.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
The Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau and volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, are assisting Jakubowicz’s family.
