Information to know about upcoming 32nd Hawaiʻi State Legislature
As the first session of the 32nd Hawaii State Legislature approaches, here’s what you need to know.
The deadlines for the 2023 Regular Session have been established and the legislative calendar has been published. The session begins at 10 a.m. on Jan. 18.
Legislators have until Jan. 25 to introduce their bills. This year, both chambers are allowing pre-filing of bills, so you may see the website begin to populate with bills as early as Jan. 11.
After Jan. 11, you’ll find the growing lists of bills on the Legislature’s website capitol.hawaii.gov on the “Reports and Lists” page. It is reachable through the shortcut on the homepage (appears in a large gray box) or via the drop-down menu under the “Laws & Research” tab.
The calendar can be found under the “Events” tab. It is also available on the Public Access Room (PAR) website at lrb.hawaii.gov/par on the “Current Legislature” page, where you’ll also find the popular “Which Deadlines Apply to My Bill?” handout.
The Legislature has posted the 2023 Grant-in-Aid (GIA) application and announced that Jan. 20 is the application submittal deadline. Find out more about the Grant-in-Aid page. It can be reached on the Legislature’s website using the “Laws & Research” tab’s drop-down menu.
At the state capitol, House and Senate leadership positions have been established, committee assignments agreed upon, and office room and phone numbers finalized.
Updated information can be found on the Legislature’s website using the drop-down menu under the “Legislature” tab and selecting “House” or “Senate.” Once there, just click on the “Leadership,” “Committees,” or “Representatives”/“Senators” buttons.
