William Browning of Līhuʻe identified as bicyclist killed from hit-and-run injuries

Kaua‘i police have identified the bicyclist who died from injuries in a Nov. 22 hit-and-run at Rice Street in Līhuʻe as 47-year-old William Browning.

Browning of Līhuʻe is Kaua‘i’s ninth traffic fatality of the year.

Police continue to search for the driver of a white Toyota Tacoma that struck Browning from behind while Browning was on a bike, according to the preliminary investigation.

Shortly after 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 22, officers responded to a report of a bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle on Rice Street in front of the Līhu‘e Town Plaza. The driver of the vehicle left the crash before the arrival of first responders.

According to a preliminary investigation, Browning was traveling westbound on Rice Street when the Tacoma that also was traveling west hit him. The Tacoma was described as having an extra cab and pipe racks.

Browning was treated on the scene and transported in critical condition to Wilcox Medical Center, where he later died.

Rice Street was closed in both directions for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, while the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
