More road closures scheduled in Kapa‘a because of roundabout construction project

The continuing roundabout construction project at the intersection of three Kapa‘a roadways will require additional road closures next week.

Portions of Mailihuna Road, Hau‘a‘ala Road and Kawaihau Road will again be closed and detours put in place from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 21-25. In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, no work will occur Nov. 24. Road work also will not occur during peak traffic times for school drop off and pick up.

Dates and times are subject to change depending on weather and other factors.

There will be intermittent one-lane closures during the week to allow for road reconstruction at the roundabout. The intersection will experience temporary traffic shifts. Temporary traffic control plans also will be in place as construction of the new roundabout continues.

During the next several weeks, traffic control configurations around the Mailihuna Road, Hau‘a‘ala Road and Kawaihau Road intersection will change. Various sections of the roundabout will require closing and detours routes will vary.

The public is urged to exercise caution and drive slowly through the marked detour areas, particularly through Kolohala Road.

The project aims to construct a peanut-shaped roundabout, sidewalks, paved shoulders and various other upgrades to improve the safety and operations of the five-way intersection. The roundabout is now expected to be completed in December.

The project as a whole is estimated to be finished in July 2023.
