Update: Flash flood warning issued for Garden Isle

Update: A flash flood advisory has been canceled and a flash flood warning was issued for Kaua‘i till 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. This warning may need to be extended if flooding persists.

At 9:03 a.m., radar indicated heavy showers and storms impacting Kauai, with additional moderate to heavy showers developing and moving ashore from the northeast. Peak rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour can be expected.

Portions of Kauai have already received over 3 inches in the past 3 hours. Water levels have risen quicklyin the Wainiha and Hanalei streams, which will likely continue through the late morning hours.

Impacts include flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas. Public road closures possible in some areas. Landslides are possible in steep terrain.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include: Līhu‘e, Kapa‘a, Kalaheo, Kekaha, Princeville, Kīlauea, North Fork Wailua Trails, Lawai, Omao, Koke‘e State Park, Wailua Homesteads, Hanalei, Hanapepe, Wainiha, Na Pali State Park, Koloa, Haena, Waimea, Wailua and Poipu.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even if they are currently dry. Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

A flood advisory is in effect until 10:15 a.m. throughout Kaua‘i, the National Weather Service reports.

At 7:04 a.m., radar indicated heavy showers and storms moving ashore over Kaua‘i from the northeast, with additional heavy showers approaching. Peak rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour can be expected.

According to NWS, minor flooding on roads is expected as well as in poor drainage areas and in streams. The heaviest rain is falling over the north facing slopes west of Kīlauea.

Some locations that will experience flooding include: Līhu‘e, Kapa‘a, Kalaheo, Kekaha, Princeville, Kilauea, North Fork Wailua Trails, Lawai, Omao, Koke‘e State Park, Wailua Homesteads, Hanalei, Hanapepe, Wainiha, Na Pali State Park, Koloa, Haena, Waimea, Wailua and Poipu.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
