Portions of Mailihuna Road, Hau‘a‘ala Road and Kawaihau Road in Kapa’a will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 to 23 for continuing construction of a roundabout, according to the Kaua’i County Department of Public Works and Grace Pacific.

The intersection of those three roads will experience temporary traffic shifts. No road work will occur during the peak traffic times for school drop-off and pick-up.

Motorists are advised that over the next several weeks, the traffic control configurations around that intersection will be changing as construction progresses. Various sections of the roundabout will require closing; and the detours routes will vary through each phase of construction. The public is urged to exercise caution and drive slowly through the marked detour areas, particularly through Kolohala Road.

Workers are building a peanut-shaped roundabout, sidewalks, paved shoulders and other roadway improvements to improve the safety and operations of the five-way intersection of these three roads. The intersection is used by people on multiple modes of transportation. This area contains Saint Catherine’s School and Church, Kapaʻa High School, Kapaʻa Elementary School, Mahelona Hospital and Gore Park.
