Saturday Update: Darby’s Path Stays Steady, Passing West of Big Island Today
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. Saturday public advisory that Darby was about 140 miles east-southeast of Hilo and about 295 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, moving west at about 22 mph. It will be west of the Big Island by 2 p.m. today, according to the Center. It’s expected to continue on that path during the next couple of days.
The storm, which as one point was a major hurricane, has steadily weakened for the past few days, becoming a tropical storm overnight Thursday. It had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts late Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, those winds remained at 45 mph.
A number of beaches and events were closed or postponed out of safety for the passing weather. Darby was expected to impact high surf and bring 2 to 4 inches of rain on the windward side of the island.
