Kaua‘i COVID cases counts, as with the rest of the state, continue to drop.

The seven-day average for new cases on the Garden Isle is 23, down from 31 last week, according to the latest County of Kaua‘i informational briefing posted Thursday, July 14. It marks the fifth straight week of declining case numbers. The state average, too, fell. The seven-day case average statewide is 558, down from 651 the week before.

However, Kaua‘i had another COVID fatality reported. A resident in his 90s who was not hospitalized passed away, Mayor Derek Kawakami announced.

“Our condolences are with his family,” Kawakami said.

District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman said the CDC has ranked Kauai as a “medium” risk area, which is good news. However, with the B4 and B5 variant still out there, it’s likely cases locally will rise again. She urged residents to take the proper precautions.
