High Surf Advisory For South-Facing Shores Extended

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a high surf advisory for south-facing shores of the state, including Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.

The advisory will be in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 28. Large breaking waves of 7-10 feet are forecast.

“A long-period south swell will build through the afternoon, peak overnight and produce advisory level surf into Monday,” the NWS advisory message Sunday afternoon said. “The swell is expected to decline late Monday, though another pulse of south swell will produce elevated surf on Tuesday.”

The south-facing shores of the islands can expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.

“Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution,” the NWS said in the advisory message.
