Work on improvements for pedestrian access to King Kaumualiʻi Elementary School will require short lane closures on sections of two island roadways.

The county Department of Public Works and Goodfellow Bros. LLC. announced that portions of ‘Akuli Street and Hanamāʻulu Road near the school will be under short lane closures from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays from May 9-20.

The improvements will include new sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“Additional activities to take place during this time are repaving and restriping of Hanamā‘ulu Road in front of the school,” said a news release from the county, adding that safe walking routes for students, parents and pedestrians will be provided.

Motorists should expect brief occasional delays during the work period.

“As a reminder, the speed limit is 15 mph near King Kaumualiʻi Elementary School while school is in session,” the news release said.
