Shark Sighting at Salt Pond

UPDATE: The county reported Sunday afternoon, May 1, that Ocean Safety officials reassessed Salt Pond Beach on Sunday and reopened the beach to swimming.

Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising no swimming at Salt Pond Beach in Hanapēpē until further notice due to a shark sighting.

OSB officials report that a possible 10-foot tiger shark was sighted just outside the pond area Saturday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

As a safety precaution, Ocean Safety officials have posted warning signs and will continue to monitor the area.

Lifeguards will reassess the area on Sunday.
