In an effort to ease weekend traffic congestion on an island highway, new Saturday contraflow hours will take effect this week.

The state Department of Transportation notified Kaua‘i residents in a news release about modified Saturday contraflow hours on Kūhiō Highway, from Kapule Highway to the temporary Kapaʻa bypass, beginning Saturday, April 30.

The new Saturday contraflow will start an hour earlier, in effect from 6:30-11:30 a.m.

“The change in schedule will address the recent uptick in vehicular traffic observed on Saturday mornings,” said the release.

The Kūhiō Highway weekday contraflow schedule will remain unchanged, from 4:15-11 a.m.

Traffic counts and efficiency will continue to be monitored, said the DOT in the release, and any future changes to the contraflow schedule will be announced in advance.
