10 Soloists Vie for Top Title of Miss Aloha Hula

The Merrie Monarch hula competition kicked off Thursday night with Miss Aloha Hula at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo.

Piʻikea Kekīhenelehuawewehiikekauʻōnohi Lopes of hālau Ka Lā ʻŌnohi Mai O Haʻehaʻe, under the direction of Kumu Tracie and Keawe Lopes, claimed the 2022 title.

Tonight, hālau will return to the stage for the ancient hula or kahiko competition. The competition will end Saturday with modern hula, or ʻauana performances by participating hālau. Winners for kahiko and ʻauana will also be announced on Saturday.
