Equipment Issues Cause Postponement of Work on Waimea Swinging Bridge

Update: Because of equipment issues with the contractor, bridge work was postponed until further notice on Menehune Road near the Waimea Swinging Bridge, according to a notice from the county Wednesday afternoon, April 20. That portion of Menehune Road and the Waimea Swinging Bridge is currently closed to allow the contractor to finish additional work, but the road and bridge will reopen at 5:30 p.m. today.

Original story: A portion of Menehune Road will be closed this week for construction work.

The county Department of Public Works announced in a news release that Menehune Road near the Waimea Swinging Bridge will be closed from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21. The closure is necessary to allow Kaikor Construction to install a permanent tower to the swinging bridge, as well as other essential permanent components.

Dates and times are subject to change depending on weather and other factors.

In addition, the Waimea Swinging Bridge will be closed to pedestrian access during the installation work.

The State Department of Land and Natural Resources alternate emergency access route on Panini Road is open to local residents and first responders via 4×4 usage only. Motorists are urged to drive slowly and cautiously through the area.
