Visitor Dies in Apparent Drowning

Mack Lewis, a 50-year-old visitor from California, died of an apparent drowning on Monday afternoon while snorkeling in waters off Poʿipū Beach.

According to a preliminary report, a call was made to the Kauaʿi Police Department’s Dispatch Center around 2 p.m. April 18 that indicated that a man was found unresponsive in the sand bar off Poʿipū Beach.

Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel from the Kōloa fire station, lifeguards, and American Medical Response were notified and immediately responded. Multiple attempts to revive Lewis were unsuccessful.

He was transported to Wilcox Medical Center and was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, police stated.

Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, were contacted to offer support to the man’s family and friends.
