Kauaʻi Police to Host Summer Camp For Aspiring Investigators

Incoming high school juniors and seniors can get a feel for a career in criminal investigations during the Kauaʻi Police Department’s first summer camp.

KPD will host the Investigations and Forensic Science Camp from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 21-23, and 8 a.m.-noon June 24 at its Līhuʻe headquarters.

Participants will learn what it takes to be a detective and forensic scientist, getting information about several topics and gaining a number of skills, including:

• Interview and interrogation techniques.
• Crime scene processing and photography.
• Report writing.
• Different types of police investigations.
• De-escalation, listening and deflection skills.
• Forensic science and digital evidence overview.
• Evidence collection.
• Fingerprints.
• Forensic pathology.

“We look forward to showing some of our island’s youth what it takes to conduct investigations and the important skills that are needed to solve crimes,” said Investigative Services Bureau Assistant Chief Bryson Ponce in a news release, adding that part of the program’s intent is also to show the students different types of job opportunities at the police department.

The camp is free and a limited number of participants will be selected based on application criteria.
