A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for north- and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.

According to the National Weather Service, large breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet are expected in the north and nine to 14 feet along the west-facing shores.

Beachgoers should expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
