1 COVID-Related Fatality Reported in Kauaʻi County

The Hawai‘i State Department of Health Kaua‘i District Health Office reported another fatality and 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, Dec. 20.

The fatality was a female resident in her 60s who was hospitalized. Total Kaua‘i COVID fatalities to date are 15, including 13 residents and two visitors.

“My heartfelt condolences to the friends and loved ones of this individual,” said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “Now more than ever, we need to stay safe this holiday and winter season to protect our loved ones and community.”

Today’s cases consist of one visitor and 13 residents. Of the 14 new cases, one is a child and 13 are adults. Eight of the cases are related to travel – four mainland and four interisland. The remaining six cases are considered community-acquired. Three of the community-acquired infections are close contacts of a previously announced case or are tied to an active cluster. The remaining three cases have no known source of infection, including one whom investigators have been unable to reach after repeated attempts or who has refused to provide information. One of today’s cases did not receive their positive test results until after their arrival on Kaua‘i.

Today’s cases bring the number of active cases to 89, with six hospitalized, and 3,432 cumulative cases. Kaua‘i’s cumulative case count includes 3,367 confirmed locally, eight probable, and 57 positive cases diagnosed elsewhere, as they received their pre-travel test results after arriving on island.
