All daytime paving work on Kūhiʻō Highway (Route 56) in Kilauea will be temporarily suspended due to increased traffic congestion and transportation delays.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation began the paving project on Nov. 3. Work was to take place during the daytime hours due to shearwater fledgling season. Paving crews will return to Kūhiʻō Highway in Kīlauea for one day, during daytime hours, on Monday, Nov. 15, to wrap up unfinished work.

The paving project will then resume in January 2022, after shearwater fledgling season is over.

HDOT will provide details on the work schedule as the new year and project restart approaches. To stay informed of scheduled work, lane closures and other public notices, click here.
