KFD Handles Brush Fire in Hanapēpē

Kaua‘i firefighters extinguished a brush fire that broke out in Hanapēpē late Sunday evening. No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened.

At approximately 10:50 p.m. on Sunday, personnel from the Hanapēpē and Waimea fire stations, and the Kaua‘i Police Department were dispatched to a brush fire along the makai side of Kaumuali‘i Highway near mile marker 17.

KPD closed the eastbound portion of the highway from 11 p.m. to 12:15 a.m.

According to a preliminary report, crews arrived on scene and found a brush fire along the highway approximately 60-feet by 20-feet in size, with flames around 15 to 20 feet high. Crews utilized tank water from Engine 6 and Truck 6 to stop the head of the fire from spreading. Truck 7 arrived shortly after, and the fire was under control at approximately 11:50 p.m. It was fully extinguished at 12:10 a.m.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and remains under investigation. The scene was cleared at 12:10 a.m.
