Hiker Rescued off Kalalau Trail

First responders rescued a hiker in Hanakoa Valley on the Kalalau Trail on Wednesday, Aug. 4.

According to a preliminary report, first responders received a report at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday of a 67-year-old male visitor in distress on the Kalalau Trail.

Crews with the Waimea fire station, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and American Medical Response responded to the incident.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 located the hiker at 3:30 p.m. on mile marker 8 on the Kalalau Trail. According to a preliminary report, the hiker was not feeling well and was light-headed. First responders secured him to Air 1 and transported him to awaiting firefighters and personnel with American Medical Response to a landing zone at Waimea Canyon Park.

Responding medics with AMR assessed the hiker, who was later transferred to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.

The scene was cleared at approximately 4:40 p.m.
