Hawai‘i Crushes Former Single-Day Record With Massive New Case Count

Hawai‘i on Thursday shattered the previous mark for most coronavirus infections identified in a single day.

The Department of Health reported 655 new cases of coronavirus statewide, bringing the overall total to 44,617. No new COVID-related deaths were reported.

The increase in coronavirus cases has been expected with more travel and the arrival of the Delta variant in the Hawaiian Islands, though not necessarily to this magnitude.

The state’s two-week average is now 436 new cases daily, with a test positivity rate of 6.9%. A map documenting new cases by district across all islands can be accessed at the DOH website.

Kaua‘i: 580

Out-of-State: 1,778

A total of 2,803 individuals have been hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 infection since the pandemic began, while at least 538 have died.

To date, a total of 1,771,301 doses of the vaccine have been administered statewide, with 60.5% of the population fully vaccinated and 67.6% having received at least one shot.
